PRESS: Gazprom to expand LNG output in Far East for exports

MOSCOW, Sep 26 (PRIME) -- Russian gas giant Gazprom plans to build a new platform for liquefied natural gas (LNG) production at its Sakhalin-2 project to boost gas exports to Japan, Nikkei reported Monday citing Gazprom Deputy CEO Alexander Medvedev.

The project is expected to be finally approved in 2017, while LNG production is to start in 2022.

The Sakhalin-2 project’s two existing LNG platforms, which combined produce about 10 million tonnes a year, are both operating at nearly full capacity.

Gazprom will also return to a possibility of building a gas pipeline from Russia’s Sakhalin Island to Japan, Medvedev also said.

“We've received strong, repeated requests” from Japanese business and political leaders to reconsider the pipeline, Medvedev said.
